Laura Nelson was born near Chicago, Illinois. She studied biology at University of Pittsburgh before embarking on travel across Europe, where she studied Renaissance artists and their depictions of anatomy and physiology in painting and sculpture. In her work she is interested in depicting mortal subjects, whether organic, inanimate or synthetic, especially through the process of death and decay.
